Zakat Calculator

Calculate your zakat on cash, gold, silver, investments and business assets, using the current nisab threshold based on gold or silver.

How it works

Choose a nisab basis and enter today's market price per gram. The nisab is the minimum wealth on which zakat becomes due: 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Many scholars recommend the silver standard because it is lower and benefits more people in need, while others use gold.

Enter the wealth you have held for one lunar year: cash at home and in bank accounts, the market value of gold and silver, shares and investment funds, inventory held for sale in a business, and money others owe you that you expect to receive. Then enter debts that are due now and can be deducted.

The calculator adds your assets, subtracts the debts and compares the result with the nisab. If your net wealth is at or above the nisab, zakat is 2.5% of that net amount. If it is below, no zakat is due this year. Personal items such as your home, car and clothes are not included.

Formula

assets = cash + gold and silver + investments + business stock + receivables net = assets − debts due nisab = metal price per gram × 85 g (gold) or 595 g (silver) zakat = net × 2.5% if net ≥ nisab, else 0

Where:

nisab
= Minimum zakatable wealth threshold
2.5%
= Zakat rate, one fortieth of net wealth
debts due
= Liabilities payable now that reduce zakatable wealth

Worked example

Someone holds $10,000 in savings and $5,000 of gold jewelry and owes $3,000 due this month. Net zakatable wealth is 10,000 + 5,000 − 3,000 = $12,000.

If the nisab is $6,000, the wealth is above it, so zakat is 12,000 × 0.025 = $300. With only $4,000 in savings and no other assets, no zakat would be due.

Practical notes on paying zakat

Pick one date each year, often in Ramadan, as your zakat anniversary and calculate your wealth on that day. Record the gold or silver price you used and your totals so next year's calculation is quick and consistent. If you are unsure whether an asset is zakatable, many people choose to include it to be cautious.

Zakat is paid to the eight categories named in the Quran, including the poor, the needy and those in debt. Many mosques and trusted charities can distribute it for you. Paying early in installments throughout the year is permitted by many scholars, as long as the total due is paid.

Frequently asked questions

Add up your zakatable assets held for a lunar year, subtract debts due now, and if the result is at or above nisab, pay 2.5% of it.
