Percent Off Calculator
Find the sale price, the original price, the result of stacked discounts or the percent difference between two prices, with optional sales tax.
How it works
Choose a mode. “After discount” subtracts the percentage from the original price. “Original price” works backward from a sale price.
“Stacked” applies discounts one after another, each on the already-reduced price, so 20% then 10% is 28% off, not 30%. “Difference” shows how much cheaper or pricier one price is than another.
Add an optional sales tax, applied after the discount as in US stores.
Formula
sale
Where:
- pct
- = Discount percentage (0-100)
- p1, p2
- = Successive discounts as decimals
Worked example
An $80 jacket at 25% off: 80 × 0.75 = $60.00, saving $20.00.
A $100 item with 20% off and then an extra 10% off: 100 × 0.8 × 0.9 = $72.00, an effective 28% discount.
Deciphering Retail Math and Stacked Sales
Understanding discounts is simple when it’s a single percentage, but retail marketing often uses 'stacked' discounts to make a deal seem better than it actually is. A common trap is assuming that a 20% off sale plus an 'extra 10% off' coupon equals a 30% discount. In reality, the second discount applies to the price *after* the first one is taken. This means you are actually receiving a 28% total reduction. Our 'Stacked' mode handles this successive calculation automatically, giving you the effective discount and the true final price so you aren't surprised at the register.
Another powerful way to use this tool is working backward from a sale price to find the original cost. This is particularly useful if you find a clearance item but want to know if the 'deal' is as significant as the tag claims. By entering the price you see and the advertised percentage, the 'Original price' mode reveals the starting point. This transparency helps you spot genuine bargains and avoid the psychological tricks of high-low pricing where original prices are artificially inflated just to show a larger discount percentage.
Tax and Price Comparisons
Sales tax timing is a frequent point of confusion during sales. In the United States, tax is almost always calculated on the final, discounted price rather than the original sticker price. Our calculator includes a tax field that applies this logic correctly, showing you the exact total you will pay out the door. Furthermore, if you are comparing two different stores with two different prices, the 'Difference' mode allows you to see the exact percentage gap between them. This is the fastest way to determine if a coupon at one store actually beats a lower base price at another.
Frequently asked questions
The second discount applies to the already-reduced price. 20% + 10% stacked equals 28% off, not 30%.
