Monthly Savings Calculator
Find out exactly how much to set aside each month to reach a savings goal, or how long it will take at the amount you can afford.
How it works
In “Monthly amount” mode, enter your goal, what you've already saved and your time frame in years and months. The calculator subtracts your current savings from the goal and divides the gap evenly across the months.
In “Time to goal” mode, enter how much you can save each month. The calculator divides the remaining gap by that amount and rounds up to the next whole month, then shows the month and year you'll get there counting from today.
A progress bar shows how much of the goal you've already covered, and a yearly table shows your running total at the end of each year. If you've already saved enough, you'll see a message saying so.
Formula
Monthly savings
Where:
- G
- = Savings goal
- S
- = Current savings
- N
- = Months = years × 12 + months
- M
- = Amount saved each month
Worked example
To save $12,000 in 12 months starting from $0: (12,000 − 0) ÷ 12 = $1,000.00 per month.
Saving $700 a month toward the same $12,000: 12,000 ÷ 700 = 17.14, rounded up to 18 months (1 year 6 months).
Strategic Planning for Financial Goals
Whether you are building an emergency fund or saving for a dream vacation, the most successful savers are those who treat their goal like a monthly bill. This calculator helps you reverse-engineer your target by showing exactly how much you need to set aside every month to reach a specific number by a specific date. A common mistake is saving 'whatever is left' at the end of the month, which often leads to inconsistent progress. By calculating a fixed monthly requirement, you can automate your savings and ensure you stay on track regardless of shifting monthly expenses.
The calculator also highlights the 'Time to goal' perspective, which is essential when your budget is fixed. If you know you can only afford to save $500 a month, this mode tells you exactly how long you will need to wait to reach your milestone. This helps set realistic expectations and prevents the frustration of feeling like you aren't making progress. Seeing the exact number of months required can be a powerful motivator to find small ways to increase your contribution and shorten the timeline.
Tracking Progress Month by Month
A goal is easier to reach when you can see it getting closer. Check your balance on the same day each month and compare it with the yearly breakdown table: if you're ahead, keep going; if you're behind, the calculator shows how much extra per month will close the gap. Small, steady deposits add up, $250 a month becomes $3,000 in a year and $6,000 in two, and the progress bar makes that growth visible, which helps you stay motivated through the slower middle months of a long goal.
