Tip Calculator
Work out the tip, the total and each person's share in seconds, with an option to round up to a clean dollar amount.
How it works
Enter the bill amount, choose a tip percentage from the presets or fine-tune it with the slider, and set how many people are splitting.
The tip is a percentage of the bill. Add it to the bill for the total, then divide by the number of people for each share.
Turn on “Round up total per person” and each share is rounded up to the next whole dollar. The extra goes to the server, and the adjusted tip and effective tip percentage are shown.
Formula
tip
Where:
- bill
- = Pre-tip bill amount
- pct
- = Tip percentage
- people
- = Number of people splitting
Worked example
Three friends have an $85.50 dinner and tip 20%.
Tip = 85.50 × 20 ÷ 100 = $17.10. Total = 85.50 + 17.10 = $102.60. Each person pays 102.60 ÷ 3 = $34.20.
With rounding on, each person pays $35.00, the total becomes $105.00, and the tip rises to $19.50 (about 22.8%).
Mastering the Art of Tipping
While standard percentages provide a helpful baseline, real-world tipping often requires more flexibility than a simple 15% or 20% entry. This calculator is designed for those who want to fine-tune the numbers, whether you are splitting a complex dinner bill with several friends or trying to reach a clean, even total for everyone involved. One of the most common questions is whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount. Traditionally, etiquette suggests tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, as taxes are a pass-through to the government rather than a service provided by the establishment. However, tipping on the final total has become increasingly common due to its simplicity.
A standout feature here is the ability to round up the total per person. This is particularly useful in group settings where nobody wants to deal with loose change or odd cents. When you enable this, the tool automatically recalculates the effective tip percentage, so you can see exactly how much extra you are providing by rounding up to the nearest dollar. This ensures that the server receives a slightly higher gratuity while making the payment process seamless for every member of your party.
Choosing Between Tip Tools
You might wonder when to use this comprehensive calculator versus our Google-style quick widget. This version is the superior choice for formal dining, group events, or situations where you need to account for specific splitting requirements and rounding logic. While the quick version focuses on speed for a single user, this tool handles the math of 'who owes what' with much higher precision. Use this page when you want to see a detailed breakdown of the tip per person and the resulting effective rate after any adjustments, providing a level of transparency that simple widgets usually lack.
