Work Time Calculator

A one-day tool: see how long you worked, find out exactly when you can leave, or add up several clock-in and clock-out segments.

How it works

Hours worked: enter clock-in, clock-out and break. Choose rounding to the nearest 5, 6 or 15 minutes if your employer uses it.

When can I leave?: enter your clock-in time, the hours you need to work and your break. We add them up to give your exact finish time.

Add segments: list several in/out pairs, such as a split shift, to get one total.

Formula

worked = out − in − break leave = in + target + break

Where:

in, out
= Clock-in and clock-out times
target
= Hours you need to work

Worked example

You clock in at 8:15 AM, need 8 hours, and take a 45-minute lunch.

8:15 + 8:00 + 0:45 = 17:00, so you can leave at 5:00 PM.

Optimizing Your Workday Schedule

The 'When can I leave?' feature is perfect for planning your departure down to the minute. By entering your clock-in time and required daily hours, you can adjust your break time to see how it shifts your finish time, helping you maintain a perfect work-life balance and meet your daily targets.

For those working split shifts or multiple roles, the 'Add segments' mode is invaluable. You can enter multiple clock-in and clock-out events for a single day to get one consolidated total. This eliminates manual calculation errors when totaling several short periods of work or tracking a break-heavy schedule throughout the day.

Navigating Rounding Rules

Many employers use rounding for payroll, often to the nearest 5, 6, or 15 minutes. The 6-minute rule is common because it divides the hour into tenths (0.1 hours). Our tool applies these rules instantly to see how your worked time translates into billable or payable time for your employer.

Be aware of the 'rounding trap' and your legal rights. Federal law requires rounding to be neutral over time, it cannot always favor the employer's bottom line. If you find your time is consistently rounded down, use this tool to document the difference between your raw clock times and the rounded totals.

Choosing the Right Work Tool

Use this Work Time Calculator for daily needs: checking your departure time, totaling split shifts, or applying specific rounding increments. It is a tactical tool. For whole-week totals, overtime pay, or CSV reports for management, you should switch to the more comprehensive Work Hours Calculator instead.

The primary difference lies in the scope of the calculation. This tool is optimized for the 'now,' providing quick answers for a single date. It lacks the weekly cumulative logic of the timesheet version but offers more granularity for daily tasks, rounding rules, and 'what-if' scenarios for leaving early.

Frequently asked questions

It splits each hour into tenths (0.1 h). Times are rounded to the nearest 6 minutes, so 7:57 worked becomes 7:54 or 8:00.
