How it works
The healthy range is the weight that gives a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 at your height.
The Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi formulas add a set amount per inch over 5 feet. They were made for medical dosing and give slightly different answers.
Enter your current weight to see your BMI and category. Frame size adjusts the Hamwi estimate by ±10%.
Formula
BMI
Where:
- h
- = Inches of height over 60 in (5 ft)
- m
- = Height in meters
Worked example
A man who is 70 in (5'10") tall: h = 10.
Devine 73.0 kg, Robinson 71.0 kg, Miller 70.3 kg, Hamwi 75.0 kg. At 80 kg and 180 cm, BMI = 80 ÷ 1.8² = 24.7.
Understanding Weight and Body Composition
Measuring your weight is a simple way to track changes over time, but it doesn't tell the whole story about your health or fitness level. Body weight is composed of muscle, fat, bone, water, and organs; two people can weigh the same but have very different body compositions and health risks. Using this tool to find your healthy BMI range is a great starting point, but it should ideally be combined with other metrics like waist circumference for a more complete picture.
Small fluctuations in daily weight are perfectly normal and are often caused by changes in water retention, sodium intake, or glycogen storage. Rather than reacting to day-to-day changes, focus on the average trend over several weeks to determine if your current lifestyle is aligned with your goals. Remember that the scale is just one tool in your health toolkit and should not be the sole measure of your progress.
Practical Measurement and Misconceptions
One frequent error is weighing yourself at different times of the day; for the most consistent data, step on the scale in the morning after using the bathroom but before eating or drinking anything. Additionally, many people get discouraged by the Ideal Body Weight formulas, not realizing these were originally designed for clinical use rather than as strict personal targets. Use these formulas as a ballpark reference rather than a definitive measure of success.
If you are very muscular or have a large frame, you may naturally fall outside the traditional ideal range while still being perfectly healthy. Frame size can significantly impact how weight is distributed on your body. Always discuss your weight and health goals with a healthcare provider who can take your full medical history and body type into account.
Frequently asked questions
None is definitive. They give a ballpark; the healthy BMI range is usually a better everyday guide.
